Sauna vs steam room: Similarity and Differences
Steam vs sauna room is a subject that is debated and analyzed by people all the time. One myth that is propagated by most people is that steam and sauna rooms are the same thing. Most people tend to think of these two terms as synonymous. A steam bath is often mistakenly referred to as a sauna bath and vice versa. But, there is a basic underlying difference between the two and that is moisture and temperature. Whereas steam is moist heat, sauna is dry heat.   Here, we highlight some features of sauna vs steam room.

Temperature is equally important in both steam as well as sauna room. Basically, in a steam room the temperature is maintained at around 45°C. This is done with the help of a steam generator. The room is shrouded in a thick mist.

A sauna, on the other hand, is a type of bath that uses dry heat. It is also hotter than a steam room. The temperature of a sauna is more than that of a steam room and it is usually around 70°C and 100°C. Temperature is the moot difference in steam vs sauna room.

The level of humidity in the room is different in a steam and sauna. The humidity level of a steam room is 100 per cent. A person sweats away the toxins from the body in such a room.
 

In a sauna room, the humidity is kept at around 20 per cent. The air is dry and hot.

A steam room needs a steam generator that runs on electricity. This generator is connected to a steam head that can either be run with built in controls or with external controls. This helps in controlling the level of moisture in the room.

In terms of maintenance, both steam and sauna rooms are similar. They are equally easy to maintain. To clean a steam room all one needs is a ceramic tile cleaner that is easily available in the market. The steam generator needs to be drained at regular intervals.

A sauna room floor needs to be cleaned more frequently. This is to prevent the wooden interiors from rotting. One can clean the walls and ceilings less frequently.

It can be mentioned here that some people are of the view that a sauna does not help in detoxification of the body though it has other major health benefits similar to steam. There is no doubt that in any steam vs sauna room debate, there are bound to be contradictions and confusion. But it is a fact that both steam and sauna are beneficial for health.
